It could have been a better year, more of a summer and certainly with less rain over drag racing events where each of the FIA & UEM meetings suffered its share of precipitation; even at Tierp where a spattering interrupted the opening ceremony as thunderstorms circled the venue. However, it was all safely concluded at the home of European Drag Racing – Santa Pod Raceway in the September European Finals. One disappointment was the Tommy Johnson decision there was a lot of resentment from certain individuals. It would be a good idea to combine all rules so that international events are all run and performed on the same level playing field.
Personally I am extremely disappointed to see the demise of the quarter-mile in fuel racing, it certainly ends an era, the quarter-mile being the standard from the start. However, all said and done I agree that it is a safety factor with some tracks and it should be a standard distance for the whole Championship.
Now back from another tour of the US that saw four NHRA events covered as well as attending the massive SEMA Show. It started in Phoenix in exhausting 100 degree Fahrenheit temperatures, not great when you are working trackside with little or no shade. I had to keep turning round to offer the other side of me to the sun between runs, a bit like being spit roasted really and at times my camera and lens were almost too hot to handle. Bakersfield was great and ten degrees cooler than in Las Vegas the 70 degree temperatures seemed at times chilly and now back in the UK it’s sodding cold and not even frosty yet! Oh Boy.
I hope everyone enjoys the winter break and projects are successfully completed in time for the Easter event at Santa Pod. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy & Prosperous New Year. See you in 2012.
